A photograph by Philip Preston of Lincoln Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, was constructed from 1088 onwards, and is located in the City of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, UK. Between 1311 and 1549, it was reputed to be the tallest building in the world, and currently is the third largest cathedral in Britain. The bishop of Lincoln, Hugh of Wells, was one of the signatories to Magna Carta and for hundreds of years the cathedral held one of the four remaining copies of the original, now securely displayed in Lincoln Castle. The photograph shows the west facing front entrance of the cathedral, viewed from the walls of Lincoln Castle.

He became interested in photography during his teenage years after purchasing a Zenith fully manual SLR camera in the 1970s, primarily doing black and white work, developing his own films and producing prints in a makeshift darkroom in his parents bathroom! His first published print was in a 1978 edition of Ashai Pentax Photography magazine, featuring a portrait of a photogenic elderly man.
